Content notes:
- Make sure that we show the diversity of the people in the area who are hungry, not just the ‘stereotypical’ guy with the stubbly beard.
- The face of hunger is not what you would expect, because 60% of the people we serve are working families with children and 20% of the people will serve are seniors
- There’s not a big difference between the face of hunger and your own face…could be your neighbor, or could be you
- People who are struggling to pay rent, food, medical expenses
- At $6.75 an hour, it’s hard to get ahead
- 50% of families who are involved earn less than 10K a year
- The food bank is a bridge to help over a rough time, it isn’t a long-term solution for families
- Serve 156K a month, distribute 30M pounds of food a year, we provide a food element to 700 nonprofit organizations
- A donation to second harvest is a donation to all 700 agencies
- They don’t turn anyone away: someone who came to them would be referred to 800 number, would be told how to get emergency food at that particular time
- Focused on nutrition, we’re trying to move away from the image of put a can in the barrel, give us the dollar so that we can buy perishable items, fresh fruit and vegetables in order to give them a nutritionally balanced diet we have to supplement
- Make it a well-rounded meal
