what is bryan reading?

Currently I am in the process of reading a number of books that I have yet to write a review, but they all have something valuable to take away. I am one of those people who seems to continuously read a number of different books at the same time.

The Savage Nation:
Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Borders, Language and Culture

Michael Savage

book url: www.michealsavage.com
buy it: amazon

Seemed like a must read. Savage's reach is now into the millions and his shoot from the hip style has generated a large listening audience. If you go to amazon it is interesting to see the wide range of people writing reviews. Very polar.

Survival Is Not Enough
Seth Godin

book url: www.zoometry.com
seth's url: www.sethgodin.com
buy it: amazon

Based on the idea that all companies must change and evolve or face extinction, Seth compares this with Darwin's theory of evolution.

Free Agent Nation:
The Future of Working for Yourself

Daniel H. Pink

book url: www.freeagentnation.com
seth's url: Just One Thing
buy it: amazon

A view of the new American worker that Daniel documents through his US travels.

Wired Words:
Language Is the New Identity

Steve Morris

buy it: amazon

An interseting, easy to page-thru book that has some interesting points on using words in the wired world. Overall I think Steve makes some good points about using words to help define your company identity, but I feel some of it is less about the internet and more about simply connecting with your customers in a language they can understand.

Simplicity Marketing:
End Brand Complexity, Clutter, and Confusion

Steven M. Cristol, Peter Sealey

peter's company url: peter_sealey
buy it: amazon

A book about reducing the choices of consumer goods and services that companies offer. Consumers are overwhelmed by the complexity of choices they need to make on a daily basis. The four strategies introduced in the book are the 4 R's: Replace, Repackage, Reposition, and Replenish.

Web Redesign:
Workflow That Works

Kelly Goto, Emily Cotler

book url: www.web-redesign.com
kelly's url: www.gotomedia.com/
emily's url: www.waxcreative.com
buy it: amazon

A five-step strategy guide, called the Core Process, that outlines the front-end re-design process. It has many real world examples with interesting recommendations, guides, and forms. I found that my process was very similar to their outline. I guess after you build enough websites you start to see patterns. As a whole this book is easy to page through and can be used as a good desk reference for quick inspiration.

Homepage Usability:
50 Websites Deconstructed

Jakob Nielsen, Marie Tahir

book url: useit.com/homepageusability/
jakob's url: www.useit.com/
buy it: amazon

Jakob creates another interesting book. Surprisingly for a guru on usability that has nearly zero graphics on his own website, this book has a ton. Homepage Usability begins with 113 tips on homepage design, while the rest of the pages are in-depth analysis of homepages.

The Art of Innovation:
Lessons in Creativity from Ideo, America's Leading Design Firm

Tom Kelley, Jonathan Littman (Contributor), Tom Peters,

book url: www.theartofinnovation.com/
ideo url: www.ideo.com/
buy it: amazon

So the best part of this book is the fact that Tom Peters has a forward in it. Tom seems to have the world record for forwards in a book. He is kind of like the John Candy of the business book world. After working at IDEO for a brief period of time and going through the Stanford product design program, I didn't get tons of new ideas out of the text, but I would recommend the book to those that want to understand the methodologies presented.

The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, Jeffrey Robbins (Editor), Richard Phillips Feynman
The Prince, Niccolo Machiavelli
48 Laws of Power, Joost Elffers, Robert Greene

So what is the point? I always wondered why people spent the time to write their reviews. I find it a challenge to articulate ideas and share my thoughts. Perhaps you might be inspired to read one of the books.
