ZURB’s chief nag, errand boy, and strategist, Bryan Zmijewski started ZURB in 1998 as a freelancer,
offering strategic design, marketing, and branding assistance. He has since grown the company
to include four full-time team members in addition to strategic partners. ZURB’s arsenal of
tricks has included identity development, illustration, information design, web design, software
design, icon design and multimedia work for clients like Sun Microsystems, Versitas, Finisar
and ClickTracks.
So where'd you work before doing the whole ZURB thing?
Was there ever not a ZURB? It seems hard to imagine...
Actually, before starting ZURB I worked at Skyline, a company that invents children's toys.
I got to work not only on creating new toy ideas, but also on figuring out the best way to market
them. When Skyline was purchased by product design bigwigs IDEO in '98, I tried to make the
transition as smooth as possible. It was a great job—I worked with over 100 toy companies and
helped create and license more than 40 toy concepts to companies like Mattel, Hasbro, and Playmates.
And before that, you were in school, right?
Actually, no. Before Skyline, I cofounded a company called eXPLICO, Inc. This company was
focused on creating how-to information. It ultimately didn't work out quite the way that we
planned, but I did get a lot of experience in web site development, recruiting, managing people
(9 consultants!) and dealing with potential angel investors and board members.
Cool. Word has it you're a Stanford man...is that right?
Yep, I got a bachelor’s degree in product design from Stanford University—and they actually
let me teach there now! I'm a lecturer for the university's design division teaching inquiring
minds both basic and advanced design conceptualization skills.
Anything else you'd like to share?
I'm a proud dad to my son Parker and a proud husband to
my wife, Karynn. I have a slight coffee addiction. My favorite color is blue.
