"According to The Economist's Innovation Survey, half of the U.S. economy's current growth
comes from companies that didn't exist 10 years ago." -
Seven Secrets to Good Brainstorming
As I read this article on IDEO's brainstorming philosophy this quote stuck out. The
article is a plug for Tom Kelly's book
The Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity from IDEO, America's Leading Design Firm .
This is the fifth piece I have read that plugs the book. The book has only been out a few months,
and it seems to be doing quite well. As far as I know this is his first book which makes it even more
exciting. I am amazed by how fast information flows. In front of me the book sits, which was given to
me by my old boss last week.
What is it that makes this a compelling book? For me not so much
the content (I have been inundated with these ideas the last eight years), but the fact
that IDEO has really begun to understand the power of media and
information while still focusing on being a design consulting company. Tom has leveraged the
"new economy" in ways that propagate his message. What is that message? Repackaged philosophies
that IDEO has used for years- Innovation drives successful companies. Companies that innovate drive
our economy.
Perhaps Tom's next book might be on how information and propaganda can drive
innovation (or at least a book on innovation). Our stock market might appreciate this effort.
