As I was strolling
down the sidewalk the sun beaming on my face felt wonderful. After a few days of rain and overcast
skies this was enjoyable. It is funny how people in northern California will bitch about the
weather here if it rains longer than a couple of days. The sun eventually pops out again.
Time always seems to be on our side.
Time. A precious commodity that is lacking in most of our lives. As I was reading Business
2.0's 10 principles of the New Economy,
"Time" came in at
number three. This was written a year ago, but it still rings true. My concerns with time,
however, are not necessarily needing more of it, but rather understanding its limitations.
Who couldn't need another lifetime to live? It seems just yesterday that FedEx was
revolutionizing the concept of time. Email and the web have made visual communication become
even more instantaneous. No longer are we struggling to get documents out at 5:30 when we
have a whole 12 hours before the next business day.
Even with "efficiency" in our
time it remains the largest conflict of our work environments. Why? People seem to have a
distorted reality of what is feasible with time. Time limitations are disappearing on all
kinds of tasks, one of which seems to be thinking. Who has time to think when you can crank
something out immediately?
Where am I going with this? I dunno...perhaps I need more time.
