As I discussed a flow chart with an engineer, I realized that we were not connecting.
In order to clarify what he had drawn I asked questions. He was very short and frustrated
by my inability to understand. It became heated. I cut the conversation short. Maybe tomorrow.
Information design is a concept
that is not new, but has received attention with the internet. Nathan Shedroff's essay brings
up some interesting points on communication, specifically his diagram on knowledge. Considering
how much it dictates our daily lives, it is surprising that this is not emphasized more in
education. Thinking about how information is presented is very important not only for designers,
but just about every occupation. Those that can organize and present will have a clear
advantage in this competitive world.
Hmmm...perhaps if you have a telephone monopoly you can get away with 9 page invoices that
have poor organization and 1 cent charges all over the place. I guess when I call my mom to
wish her a happy birthday 15 other organizations will celebrate with her by making money off the
call. Happy Birthday Mom!
