Design is communication. Today we have so many ways of communicating it can be disturbing.
Cell phone, pager, snail mail, email, wireless palms, voice mail, radio, web, television,
electronic billboards are all competing for our attention.
As a designer it can be difficult to cut through all this media to communicate a message.
The challenges are not only catching peoples attention, but giving them something worth investigating.
I became frustrated by this idea while critiquing the sketch work my students had done for class.
Some of the students had obviously put some time into creating their homework, but most of the
class missed the point. Sketching an idea on paper
requires connecting with an audience. It also means thinking about why someone would spend time
looking at your work. "Because it was assigned as homework" is not a reason. It is the responsibility
of the designer to make these decisions, otherwise the message is lost.
Design requires connecting with people, understanding their needs, and providing something of
intrinsic value. Look to people for answers. People won't give you answers, but they will
challenge you to figure them out. Seize these opportunities.
