I Want More From My Email

friday, february 16, 2001

Reading an article on email it reminds me just how underutilized the tool really is in our communications. I get lots of email everyday, but it seems limited in its current form. The power of instantly communicating with people around the world is amazing. The challenge of the future is figuring out how to employ email more effectively.

What could I possibly want from my email that I don't get? (These may already be available) An email system that allows me access to my emails on my hard drive through a web based application. It has to allow me all the main features of Outlook and must update my files on my computer (not just read them, I don't have time to filter information twice). I think of my computer as "home base" so I want this to be my control center.

I want an email system that carries a thread so that when I email a client back and forth (RE:) it doesn't get lost in the other 40 emails sitting in their inbox. The red flag doesn't cut it. I want to be automatically brought to attention because I have a high relevancy rate (because I am important :) ...)

How about a system that establishes a knowledge base from peer to peer communication. I want a online web page that automatically archives dialog between a team of users. A discussion group that is controlled by email on your hard drive. This prevents the "lost" or "forgotten" email syndrome. Email groups are great, but they create a mess of information.

Email is larger than the "web" and more information is shared using this tool. The question to all the dot-com companies is: How do you go beyond trying creating useless splashy web pages and figure out how to use written communication as your main tool? It is more challenging, but this is where the action is in the future. It is raw, and personal.
