As I was walking Cooper today he jumped on the back of my pants and scuffed them with dirt. I was
pissed because they had just been washed. Accepting this (it was sorta my fault because I had the soft
frisbee hanging from my back pocket) he then jumped on my front and put a big mud paw print on my leg.
As I was wiping it off he planted another mud swipe on my butt. Swell. Perhaps if I had been more
attentive to his behavior and not my pants I would have walked away with only one print on my ass...
I continued walking and a young boy dressed as pokemon was crying with his scooter. I asked him if
he was ok. He stop crying. He politely informed me that everything was ok, he was just trying to get
his brother to go his direction.
Designers often try to control their designs to instigate results. As an engineer I find myself
trying to create logic out of random things to generate an effect. I try
hard to make things rational. Design, however, is not predictable and you have to account for the
incalculable. Great design has the ability to surprise, not necessarily evoke desired effects. The
experiences we remember the most are the ones that are not always written in the script. People will
discover their own emotions if you give them the flexibility and option. Design should not tell people
how to feel.
I offer you a sweet memory of Cooper's puppy mug shot. Apparently this is a "magnet",
so what better day than Valentines to spread love. I won't hold my breathe for the effect...
