Class meets Wednesday nights @ 7:30pm in Terman 556 and will last a couple of hours.
Please be on time to class.
Class Introduction:
The 10 week class will focus on strengthening design and rendering skills.
Our main goal, however, will be learning how to conceptualize, sketch, and present ideas.
By the end of the quarter we should have covered the basics of sketching and given
students enough of an overview that they feel comfortable in using sketching as a
communication tool. Most classes will cover new material with the lecture/demo period and
a corresponding webpage. Time to practice and/or start homework will follow the lecture.
Students are always encouraged to bring in sketch work they are doing for other classes.
The course structure is flexible enough that we may be able to adjust assignments to provide an overlap
with the sketch requirements of other classes.
The class topics will include:
1. supplies
2. orthographic views
3. perspective
4. marker shading
5. rendering details with pencil
6. shadows
7. ideation
8. thumbnails
9. layout
10. sketch development
11. rendering techniques
Each week students are to have their assignments ready to present at the beginning
of class. Critiques are a very important part of the class. Attendance will
be taken from work that is presented. In order to pass the class you will need
to be at 9 of the 10 classes with homework on the board. Please be on time to class.
Each student will be required to keep a portfolio of work-including sketches,
underlays, constructions, etc. The portfolio will be handed in during the last week
of instruction for review by the instructors. Receiving credit for the course will be based upon
attendance, class preparation, and the final portfolio.
